Taxi Security Cameras

Taxi cameras were required to be fitted to all taxis for added security and driver safety by 1 August 2011.

From January 2000 to February 2010, the New Zealand Police recorded 677 assaults against taxi drivers. A number of serious assaults on taxi drivers since December 2008 that saw two drivers killed, heightened concerns among the industry and the public about the safety and security of taxi drivers.

Following the death of a second driver within 13 months, the Ministers of Labour and Transport met on 10 February 2010 to discuss safety options with representatives of the taxi industry, who advocated strongly for the Government to intervene to improve taxi driver safety. The Minister of Transport received a report from transport officials on 17 March 2010 examining these options, and he met with taxi industry representatives to discuss the report's recommendations.

An amendment Rule to the Operator Licensing Rule 2007 came into force on 1 February 2011.

All taxis had until 1 August 2011 to install security camera systems. Existing Approved Taxi Operators at the time the rule came into force had until 1 August 2011 to incorporate the new measures into their operating rules.
